How To Apply for Disability in Rhode Island

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is a federal organization that manages the two main disability programs known as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Since the programs are federal, most states follow the same procedures throughout the application process. However, there are minor variations between the states and it important to know these differences. Here are the differences for the state of Rhode Island.

Rhode Island State Supplements for SSI

A claimant of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can receive a maximum of $733 per month from the Social Security Administration (SSA). However, most states provide an additional state benefit on top of the SSI benefits if an individual qualifies. How much a claimant receives depends on his or her living arrangement.

The state of Rhode Island gives non-married claimants an additional $39.90 per month and married claimants an additional $79.38 per month. If a claimant is living in the household of another, in assisted living or in a Medicaid facility, they potentially qualify for larger state supplement payments.
