How To Apply for Disability in New Jersey

If a citizen of New Jersey has a disabling condition that prevents him or her from working, they might qualify for either Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Both of these disability programs are federally run by the government agency known as the Social Security Administration (SSA). Almost all states follow similar procedures for the application process, but some do have minor differences. Here is an overview of Social Security Disability in New Jersey.

Chances of Approval at a Hearing

An applicant applying for Social Security Disability in New Jersey has a higher chance of approval than most other states in the United States. Although, this comes at the cost of having to wait much longer for a hearing date or final decision than the national average. It is known that Judges of New Jersey are more likely to approve applicants for lump-sum payments all the way back to the date they became disabled, not just when they applied. Here is a comparison of New Jersey hearing office statistics compared to the national averages.

New Jersey National
Avg. Hearing Wait Time 17.3 Months 14.9 Months
Average Processing Time 512 Days 461 Days
Cases Approved 52% 44%
Cases Denied 31% 38%

New Jersey State Supplements for SSI

The Social Security Administration regulates the maximum amount a claimant of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can receive. As of 2015, the maximum amount one can receive is $733 per month. Although most states, such as New Jersey, provide claimants with an additional state supplemental benefit on top of the federal SSI payment to compensate for the cost of living in that state. Claimants of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) are not eligible for state supplemental benefits.

How much an individual can receive in state benefits depends on his or her present living arrangement. Below are the different living arrangements with their corresponding payment amounts for 2015. Keep in mind that the table lists the combined federal and state benefit amounts. These numbers represent the maximum amount a claimant can potentially earn overall per month. Payments may be lower if the claimant has countable income.

Category Monthly payment
Person living alone or with others in own household $764.25
Person living with spouse who is not eligible for SSI $886.00
Person living in someone else’s household and receiving support $532.98
Person living in licensed residential health care facility $943.05
Person living in public general hospital or Medicaid-approved facility $40.00
Couple living alone or with others in own household $1,125.36
